Popular Treatments For Obesity

Obesity has become a widespread problem in the United States. Doctors are discussing overall weight loss programs with young families before it becomes a major issue for them. The first and foremost treatment for obesity is nutrition, exercise and reducing caloric intake. Other treatments for obesity include supplements, or diet pills, gastric bypass surgery and lap band surgery.

Fewer Calories

People who are overweight basically take in too many calories. If exercise is not included in their lifestyle, then the pounds will slowly be added on. As we age, our bodies tend to slow down and the usual amount of exercise that we do in our daily lives dwindles and even though we may not be eating more food, the pounds will still be added due to the lack of exercise. This is why exercise programs are one of the first treatments used for obesity. For someone who is severely obese, walking is the ideal beginning of a program for obesity. Understanding how important nutrition is in the diet and then reducing the fat and carbohydrates in the diet is the next step in treatments for obesity.

Diet Pills

The majority of doctors do not advocate diet pills, but there are “diet” doctors who only prescribe diet pills. These pills are either appetite suppressants or stimulants to boost the energy. These do work and help you to lose the weight, but diet pills are not a life style change and are not a life long treatment for obesity. Once you stop taking the pills, statistics show that people do gain back their weight.

Obesity Surgeries

There are now obesity surgeries which have come to the aid of many people who suffer from obesity. These surgeries are Gastric Bypass surgery and Lap Band surgery.  For these treatments of obesity, the patient must be severely obese and have additional health issues.  Obese individuals do have additional health issues, so insurance companies are putting these surgery treatments for obesity into their plans. They realize if a person can overcome obesity, their need for additional health insurance will decrease. It is a win win situation for both the obese person and the insurer.

Gastric Bypass surgery for the treatment of obesity is an invasive procedure where the stomach is decreased and food is eliminated quickly. There are major lifestyle changes involved in this treatment for obesity and the surgery itself is dangerous. Twenty percent of Gastric Bypass surgeries end in death.

Lap Band surgery is the latest treatment for obesity. A band is placed at the upper part of the stomach only allowing a small amount of food to be digested at any given time. Food must be chewed into very small pieces before it is able to pass through the band which leads to the larger part of the stomach. Nutrition is very important after this surgery, since only small amounts of food can be taken in and the body will become very weak if only sugar and carbohydrates are consumed. Lap Band surgery is non-invasive and a very safe treatment for obesity. There have been no deaths reported due to Lap Band surgery and many Gastric Bypass surgical patients have returned to their doctors and had their procedures changed to a Lap Band system. All of these treatments for obesity demand lifestyle changes. Obesity is a major health issue and healthy diet with exercise is needed in any one of these treatments.
